The Gene Discovery Platform is SweTree Technologies' main in-house research platform. It emanates from the Poplar Genome Program which was started in 1997 as a collaborative effort between prominent research groups in Sweden.

The Gene Discovery Platform focuses on identifying genes linked to wood and flower formation in poplar. SweTree Technologies has a57a.jpgccess to the Populus EST database and, through its close collaboration with Woodheads AB, a unique knowledge on how to functionally explore the database information.

As wood formation occurs essentially in the same way in all hardwood trees, a confirmed gene function in poplar will almost certainly have the same function in other hardwood trees, e.g. eucalyptus. Most of the wood related traits are also expected to have very similar functions in conifers.

  • The Gene Discovery Platform consists of several research tools, two of which are the FuncWood GENErator and the FuncWood Explorer.

FuncWood GENErator
The Poplar Genome Program has to date identified 20 000 unique genes, many of them with unknown functions. With DNA arrays it is possible for us to study, in parallel, the activity of these 20 000 genes in tissues of interest for fiber production and flowering. We estimate that over 2 000 of these genes will show expression patterns that suggest their roles in fiber production and flowering.

113a.jpgTo be able to describe the functional properties of these genes, and hence create and defend intellectual property through strong patents, we confirm that the selected gene indeed has a role in a process that is interesting to modify. This is achieved by inactivating gene expression using RNAi technology or by over-expressing the gene and then studying the effect on the mutant tree biochemistry, physiology and anatomy. This strategy opens up completely new commercial avenues, especially since genes with unknown functions are studied.

  • Through this large scale gene mining program, genes of highest commercial interest and importance are selected for further characterization.

  • As part of a larger collaboration, SweTree Technologies can also make it possible for companies to test their proprietary genes in a large scale verification program using the FuncWood GENErator.

FuncWood Explorer
FuncWood Explorer is an advanced analytical platform that aims to efficiently characterize gene function and fiber properties. Regardless of using transgenic tools or traditional breeding methods, FuncWood Explorer provides information on the breeding results and which plants are most likely to have the selected end-product properties.

  • The high capacity of FuncWood Explorer means that it is well suited for screening a large number of wood samples, identifying and selecting only the plants of interest, which can then be fully characterized.

The platform consists of advanced chemical, physical and analytical techniques, and pilot scale capabilities for pulp and paper processes. This is paired with a unique knowledge of wood formation and an understanding of wood properties and the final paper products. 44a.jpg

  • As part of larger collaborations, SweTree Technologies can also make it possible for companies to utilize FuncWood Explorer.

SweTree Technologies has developed and patented an environmentally friendly selection marker technology for transgenic trees.

Promotors
SweTree Technologies has patented several promoters that enable a highly specific and regulated gene expression for wood formation and growth promotion. We are continuously developing new promoters for specific commercial uses.
