Since cloned conifer seedlings can not be efficiently generated with traditional tree breeding practices, such as cuttings, we are developing a somatic embryogenesis (SE) program to generate elite seedlings of Norway spruce.

In collaboration with Sveaskog AB, Bergvik Skog AB, Södra and Holmen Skog AB we are developing industrial methods in order to produce elite lines of Norway spruce in large scale. We have just finished the first phase of the project and plan to start the second phase during the fall. In the first phase we have succesfully solved several key problems for making automation of the SE process possible. In the second phase running to 2012 we will put together a pilot production system which will have a capacity of producing millions of plants per year.
